Consider

The Consider area of the McLean Loop of Leadership Agility is about understanding what you know now, and figuring out whether there are things which you can’t predict moving forwards.

Tools

Some tools you can use here in order to help you consider your situation are:

  • System Visualisations

  • Process Maps

  • SWOT Analysis

  • 5 why’s

  • PESTLE Analysis

  • Looking at quantitative data available

  • Knowns and unknowns framework

  • Case studies of previous similar challenges

Questions

Some useful questions to ask yourself to provide a point of reflection during your journey within consider are:

  • What is the situation I am facing?

  • What are the main problems?

  • How is the problem being solved NOW? (if at all?)

  • What outcome would I like to see?

  • Have I seen these problems before?

    • What might be different this time?

  • What do I know already?

  • Can I predict what will happen next?

  • Is there a clear path to a positive outcome?

  • What assumptions am I making?

  • What is my hypothesis?

Moving on

The aim of the Consider area is to figure out if there are things you can’t predict or can’t be repeated in the future. If you have managed to find some things that fall into this category, you can move on to the Curiosity area.

Those things which are repeatable and predictable do not need the approach suggested in this model to be applied to them. There are other tools which can be used in an ordered domain.
