Weeknote 16 (and 15) - Catching up

So I didn’t manage a weeknote last week as I was feeling a little under the weather. I’ve had a mixed couple of weeks - a household full of illness, but on the upside, a few good sessions, a meetup and a ‘roadshow’. :)

What should I remember this week for?

The BWS roadshow - lots of people doing cool things outside my normal world.

Word of the week:

Overwhelming

Message of the week:

So many people doing amazing things in the world - go find them!

Who taught me something or really made me think this week?

I went to the Business Women Scotland Roadshow in Glasgow this week. Lots of really good stuff and some really lovely people. One person who really made me think was one of the speakers - Kirsty Mac. She had recently returned from building a school in Africa and she spoke about how the children she met there were just so present. She said that they had what we would consider to be nothing but they were the happiest people she had ever met. Nothing to distract them, they could just live and be. It made me think about how superficial a lot of our lives are. But is there a way to fix that now? To be less conscious of stuff and just live? I’m not sure there is.

Where did I find inspiration?

Last week I was at Lean Agile Glasgow for the first time in ages for the morning Lean Coffee. There were 6 people there - it was so lovely to be around people with different perspectives for a good chat around some interesting topics. Makes me realise how much I’ve still to learn!

The roadshow had another great speaker who gave me inspiration. Nicola Nolan spoke about business marketing - but she is part of an agency who do it differently - ALT Practice. They approach their work in a conversational way. They can’t tell their clients or their own finance teams what they will do or how much it will cost. They chat, they work it out as they go along. It struck me as an approach so closely aligned with the type of work I do, it really made me smile and feel happy that others in different industries realise there is another way.

What am I still trying to work out?

The clients I work with all have different contexts and different problems to solve. However, I feel I can help all of them. What I’m trying to work out is, how do I find the things in common - I need to raise it to a level of abstraction that speaks to many different contexts. It’s a balance and I’ve not worked it out yet - I don’t have clarity yet.

How can I be better next week?

I felt completely overwhelmed by the time the weekend was here. So much to do, so little time to do it. Me and mini have both been ill, and my usual day off was spent learning at the BWS Roadshow. I had a full-on week at work, so much to do at home and I felt like I was drowning. So, I visualised it. Wrote each task on a post it. My amazing husband took it upon himself to help me get through it. He worked through them one by one, doing what he could and just asking for my input when he needed it. He took so much of the thinking away and I am incredibly grateful to have such amazing support from him.

So on to next week. I need to ask for help.

What am I looking forward to next week?

I’ve got a fairly quiet week ahead so looking forward to some time to think. Which will be nice!
